Symposium Issue – A Global Reckoning: Answering Calls for Change
The Washington International Law Journal seeks artwork for our annual Symposium issue themed on the international movement to address racial and systemic inequity across the globe. The issue will be published Winter 2021, with selected artwork featured in online, during our Spring 2021 Symposium, and potentially in print.
For this special issue, we welcome submissions from artists from around the globe who are producing pieces in response to the social movements they are most impacted by.
ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM ISSUE
The police killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade and many others have inspired the latest wave of uprisings in retaliation to police violence and systemic racism—this time bigger than has been seen in the United States in decades. Nearly three months later, as the summer of 2020 comes to a close, protests and clashes with police continue worldwide.
In the days that followed Floyd’s, Taylor’s, McDade’s, and others’ murders, protests and vigils were held across the globe in solidarity with America’s historically marginalized communities. Not only did communities abroad stand in solidarity with BIPOC in America, but they also sought systemic change within their institutions, sometimes sparking new initiatives, and other times injecting new life into existing struggles.
The Washington International Law Journal is looking for artwork to reflect the human and cultural impact of these movements and the global conversation around systemic racism and systemic oppression. If selected, your work will be featured alongside articles by law professors and attorneys from around the globe, exploring the impact of legal systems on social movements, and the impact of social movements on those legal systems.
